Tips for renting a car in South Africa
1. Do not leave handbags or valuables exposed in the car, even if you only go for a few minutes.
2. It is highly recommended to rent a car with Zero Excess, including windshields, tires and undercarriage. Some competitors sell "Zero Excess" insurance, but in the event that there is no other vehicle involved in the accident, they charge for the damage under the negligence section. This is not the case with us, and to this day no renter has been charged for damage.
3. Fuel prices are controlled by the government in South Africa so many drivers prefer not to fill up with gas upon returning the vehicle, but let the rental company fill up with gas for about 40 R fee + the cost of the gas. If you chose to refuel, do so at the airport and keep the receipt.
4. It is recommended to book vehicles in advance. The prices and availability are better and cancellation is free up to 72 hours before.
5. Right turns do not have the right of way unless there is a green traffic light with an arrow. Traffic must be allowed to pass first.
There is an add-on for Waze that reminds you to always turn into the left lane. It costs 10 shekels and saves lives.
6. Don't stick too much to the left. Most of the damages experienced by travelers are damage to the left mirror and scratches on the left bumper.
7. Toll gates are charged directly by the rental companies and deducted from the deposit. There is an electronic tag in the car and you can simply pass through the lane without queuing.
8. Almost all the speeding reports of travelers are from 4 locations: Knysna, Wilderness (there are 2), the descent from Franschoek to Stellenbosch, and on the N2 before Swellendam.
9. In South Africa, the rental companies do not require an international driver's license, but it is mandatory that the license is also in English.
10. It is not necessary to clean the vehicle before returning it, but if the dirt is not reasonable, you may be charged for cleaning the vehicle. This is an extreme case where the rental company has to send the vehicle to be cleaned by an external supplier.
